Which sentence is correct?
I am sad, because only FEW people came to the party.
Or

I am sad, because only A FEW people came to the party.

Few and little describe the quantity in a negative way:
So, if you say you are sad, it means you have a bit of negative feeling here (your perception about the fact of "nobody having shown up" ), so the option would be:

"I am sad, because only FEW people came to the party."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Yet, you would use  "a few", if in  a positive (almost neutral way):

"I am glad that I have a few friends, so the party wasn´t ruined, even if just two
of them came to it!"

"I've got a few friends" (= maybe not many, but enough)

Tenho "ums poucos amigos"/tenho poucos amigos  (não muitos, uns dois ou três....talvez cinco ou seis)

I've got a little money" (= I've got enough to live on)
(Tenho um pouco de dinheiro.   (tenho um dinheirinho, que dá só pro gasto.,,,)

Hope it helps.
