I just asked a kid that went to an elementary school in the US ( pre-school to 6th grade) and he said he doesn't remember much but he tells me that they had to "LINE UP" to walk around the hallway, when they went to lunch or to another class, or the library.
Now, the same kid is in high school, and says the only time he stands in line is at the cafeteria for lunch.
One topic leads to another, they don't have recess during high school and the only line they stand in is the lunch line. However in elementary school they are not so independent. They also line up before the bell rings and wait for their teacher to come and get them to their class.
