Assunto:  This, that, adjective or pronoun?
 
Mensagem:  What is that?
Not really a demonstrative pronoun, if taken isolated.

But it is if you referred to a previous sentence as in:
What is the strange, polka-dotted, Sasquatch-like creature coming toward us? --> What is that?

See, "what is that?" referred to the sentence in italics.

Could be also , if you were, for example, pointing at something (so it wouldn´t be needed any previous sentence.
