This is a good example of how far grammar can lag behind common usage.  Most native speakers would say "was", of course.  And that would be incorrect, of course!  In ten-fifty years, perhaps the grammar rule will change and all those people who were wrong will be told that they are right.  It is my understanding that the "contrary to fact subjunctive" has died in the UK and "was" is considered correct.  Right in one country, wrong in another.

Fifty years ago English professors told us that "ain't" would be accepted soon.  Well, it hasn't been accepted.  I cringe when I hear it.
