Mensagem:  Interesting explanations.

As a rule of thumb, "did" refers to a specific time period or incident in the past, but "do/does" can refer to a broad time period including the past, present and arguably the future.  (Tiage said about the same.)

Did you ever get lonely on the ranch?  (Asked of a person who no longer lives on the ranch.)
When I got lonely, I would go into town for supplies or maybe just a cup of coffee.

Do you ever get lonely on the ranch?
  (Asked of a person who still lives on the ranch.  He may be lonely right now.   An hour from now, that person may feel lonely again.)
When I get lonely, I go into town for supplies or maybe just a cup of coffee.
