Mensagem:  When talking about how much is owed in a restaurant, "check" is much more common than "bill".

Ma'am, may I have the check, please?

For some strange reason, the word "bill" is often avoided in spoken English.

How much do I owe you for work on the car?
How much are the damages?  (humorous)
How much did it set you back to get the door fixed?
