Mensagem: 

The area of London is smaller than the area of Washington.

Katiana, think of it this way (NOT GRAMATICALLY CORRECT in this usage):

 

The area of London is more small than the area of Washington.

OR

The area of Washington is less small than the area of London.

 

Both sentences say the same thing, that comparativelly London is small, Washington is large.
