Pretty sure the only reason students in Brazil stay with their parents is because they simply can´t afford to move too far away.
It´s certainly not a matter of pure preference, it´s just that if they move to another town their living standards will almost always go down except when their parents have enough money so that their kids can spend as much as they please.
In Brazil, moving to another state (as a student) and supporting yourself legitimately on your own is very hard simply because the wages paid to unskilled labor (the ones students are likely to get) are very low.
Without the support from your parents you will probably have a lot of trouble even to be able to rent a place as the "imobiliárias" won´t let you rent a place without someone (who has assets like real estate) accepting liability if you don´t pay the rent.
