Maybe this can help Monique; focus on the a in ancient, angel, and able. 

I think Monique is getting confused with the sound of a in able, while the focus should be on the letter a as in the words /e/ncient / /e/ngel and /e/yble

Then, a has the same sound in all 3 words, and it is pronounced as the a in pay, right?

I've never studied pronunciation, and neither stress and reduction. So, please forgive me for my lack of technical expertise in expressing my point.
