I am not convinced there is a difference.
I like reading mysteries. = I like to read mysteries.
I like going to the supermarket. = I like to go to the supermarket.
Regardless of which I use, nobody is going to raise their eyebrows and stare at me. Both sound very natural.
Something important to remember is that grammar is not always chiseled into marble. I have heard university professors argue about grammar points. Grammar is more a set of observations than a set of rules.
