If "daydreaming" is what you meant by "absence"; that is, the student "is there" except that not (só que não!).
In this case you could use some creativity, bring news items (from newspapers) to the class, use some movies, make them interact with you.
Interacting, is good, if there´s an English lab at the school you may choose a word and ask about a certain aception of it, then you may ask them to run a search (for example, @ sites like English Experts, English Made In Brazil, Speak Up, etc.
Try to catch them "off-guard", with new words, new approaches. One day print out and bring a song lyrics, the other day a newspaper clip or a TV review, something about soccer (you could compare American soccer vs the Brazilian one).
Make a quiz about soccer, about the weather, what you have.
