A simple way to remember the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony is that a misdemeanor is punishable by a fine and/or a year and a day in prison. and a felony is punishable by prison sentences greater than one year.
"Punishable" does NOT mean that the sentence will be carried out, merely that it is possible to enforce such a sentence.
