Very well said, Ricardo. 

 

In the US Army the philosophy of instruction is, "If the student didn't learn, the instructor didn't instruct."  In other words, learning is the responsibility of the instructor. 

 

Another difference is the use of long sentences.  In Portuguese, the longer the sentence, the more intelligent the writer is thought to be.  In English, the longer the sentence, the more the writer should be encouraged to take a writing course.  The long sentence is seen very much as a negative, not a positive.  Many years ago I had an instructor who once worked with an award winning journalist from Rio.  In Brazil, she won prizes for her articles.  In the USA, she was constantly criticized for sentences that seemingly had no end.
