Dale, as a speaker of Brazilian Portuguese, I have to disagree:
I think a better translation would be "trabalhava". It's a minor difference, but it does a better job of showing that the work went on for some time in the past and was not a "one shot" job.
I really don't see any problems with trabalhei here as one can infer that it was a habit in the past -- yes the pretérito perfeito simples can also convey the ideia that something went on for a certain period in the past and it ceased to exist later on.
