Some books that would be great for American students would be terrible for Brazilians because of the slang, regionalisms, dialects, etc. Friends in China talk of reading Tom Sawyer, for example, but I can't imagine how the handle the dialogue. So much would have to be explained to the non-native. It was quite a shock to re-read it recently. It's not in the simple language that I remember.
Regardless of the books you choose, I'd suggest re-reading them from the viewpoint of an EFL student. I certainly wouldn't blindly tell students to read this or that.
