I've never heard of such a requirement.
The odd thing is that the employer wants "two weeks notice", but the employer may tell the employee that he is fired as of that day. Years ago I saw an incident in which a man appeared at work (a machine shop), and was fired within one or two minutes. Clearly, the boss had wanted to fire him for some time and had chosen that day (the first day of the work week) to do so. Why hadn't this been done on the last day of the work week? (Our work week began on Saturday afternoon and ended on Thursday at midnight.)
