When you take someone at face value, you assume that everything he says is true, there are no hidden agendas, you are not being deceived, etc. If he says you can trust him, you give him the keys to your car and the combination to wall safe, and you leave for a two-week vacation, believing that everything will be fine upon your return. Your cousin says he will never drink alcohol again, you take him at face value, and you trust him blindly around alcohol.
Now, getting to your question:
'But to take Madonna AT FACE VALUE is to misunderstand one of the most complex and intelligent female stars os the past two decades.'
I understand the sentence above to mean "But to see Madonna only as an outstanding singer and actress is to misunderstand one of the most complex and intelligent female stars of the past two decades." In other words, she is much more than what she appears to be.
