You could use the following imagery: you can be misled by buying something for, say, one Dollar.
Let´s say, you have two Dollars in your pocket and a potato worth it, but the Dollar is devaluated against the Real. The next day the Potato cost just the same, but two Dollars don´t buy it anymore, thus, now the two Dollars you brought misled you.
You took it at it´s face value.
