"Slammer" is indeed widely used.  They say it comes the sound the door makes when it "slams shut".  There are other words too:  cooler (you'll hear that in WWII movies), hoosgow (apparently from the Spanish "juzgado"), calaboose (from the Spanish "calabozo"), the pen (penitenciary), the big house, to go up the river (apparently a New York expression referring to going up the river to Sing Sing Prison), etc.  "The hole" is isolation, solitary confinement.  I've always liked "ver o sol quadrado".  Describes it perfectly!
