Points withing a grade or passing grade apply to all of the points earned during a term (quarter or semester ), in the US educational system.
You can earn points for attendance, for turning your assignments on time which include papers, quizzes, attendance, and one can even earn points for extra credit.
The grading system for a particular class (course) will be explained within the syllabus for that particular class (course).
All of the points one earned will be added up and make a grade or final grade for that one particular term within a class.
