2 : a final race, contest, or election to decide an earlier one that has not resulted in a decision in favor of any one competitor

You are a candidate for club president.  The club has 100 members/voters.  You win 35 votes, Mary wins 34, and Charles wins 33 votes.  Did you win?  Maybe, maybe not.  If the rules say the winner must win the majority of votes (majority = more than half), then you must have a runoff election between you and Mary.  Since Charles is no longer a candidate, his supporters may now vote for either you or Mary.  Whoever receives 51 votes or more will be the new club president.
