Q: How can I complete this sentence?

I´ll have to travel on business on Sunday and I´m sorry about this. I wish I ...............



A: There are many correct possible answers


Didn’t have to


Could stay


Was unemployed


Didn’t travel for work


(You’ll notice the verb form is remote to indicate unreality – a lot of people refer to the form as past – but it’s not  ... we are after all talking about the future)


Q: Why would a language use a past verb form to talk about the future? 

A: It doesn’t, it’s just that people don’t understand its structure.
