Q: How can I complete this sentence?
I´ll have to travel on business on Sunday and I´m sorry about this. I wish I ...............
A: There are many correct possible answers
Didn’t have to
Didn’t travel for work
(You’ll notice the verb form is remote to indicate unreality – a lot of people refer to the form as past – but it’s not ... we are after all talking about the future)
Q: Why would a language use a past verb form to talk about the future?
A: It doesn’t, it’s just that people don’t understand its structure.
