The other day I saw Sarah Jessica Parker on TV while she was being interviewed by Letterman - she seemed prone to using "big" [ Latin based ] words.
Dave Letterman looked flabbergasted when she used the word "gobsmacked". I bet Google had millions of hits that night for the word "gobsmacked".
Portuguese and Spanish native speakers have a strong tendency to use English words which have a Latin root. Such words should be avoided in everyday communication with native speakers of English.
