Maybe there are English speaking people that take it more slightly, there is a guy (British one) that lauched this site http://www.gringoes.com/ in Sao Paulo.
It have been an almost instant hit wich curiously a week or fortnight after having "born" had mention in BBC News etc.
In most parts of Brazil, being a gringo is almost an honor, once Brazilians have a warm welcome towards them. In general, I say, but I am not saying that it is a hundred percent, making generalizations is never good.
It´s a point, and others Brazilians might give your testimony about it.
Apart from that, let´s say, abroad it is taken pejoratively.
All in all, not knowing the guy or gal previously, it´s better assume that it´s pejorative.
