In my opinion, ESL speakers have to be extra careful about using slang because the natives may not understand what the foreigner is trying to express.
One suggestion for those living abroad would be to pay close attention to the native speakers around and try to pick up "local" slangs.
Local slangs are definitely more effective than obscure slang from an ESL book.
Books do take a long time to get compiled and published. By the time a new book is out on the market its content could already be 5 years old.
I am not trying to say that slang itself changes that fast but new slangs do come about every once in a while.
MTV and VH1 are good sources for new or current slang but again I'd stick to more local slang if I was to try to use it.
