Jazz,

Phonics refers to a  method of teaching reading which trains recognition of the sound values of individual letters and graphemes. It is designed for young people learning to read their native languages and is especially useful with languages with a poor sound-to-spelling correspondence, like English. However, it is based on the assumption that the learner knows the spoken language.

The counterpart of phonics - the study of phonology and the use of phonetic symbols - is without a doubt very useful in ESL teaching. Given the fact that English has an extremely high spelling inconsistency (or a pronunciation inconsistency, depending on the standpoint), and given the fact that in Brazil contact with English tends to be predominantly with the written language, spelling interference in speech is very intrusive and disruptive and the use of phonetic symbols can be helpful if not indispensable to neutralize the interference.
