Well, I understand that you guys favour the past perfect in the given case. Or I didn´t follow you? only to let Lucatan posted.

Grammar point in favour of past perfect.
The past perfect does not always have to be relative to an action. It can be relative to any point in time that has been established as a reference point, or that is the location of the writer's or speaker's viewpoint. I read somewhere else.
There the the viewpoint would be established at my traveling time.
