 My pick:

"Prestar um concurso público" -  To take the civil service examination.
(meaning public entrance examination, of course.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_service
In Brazil public servants are hired through [public] entrance examinations, known as Public Contests - Concurso Público, in Portuguese.

There are levels of civil service careers, hence different exams as well: e.g. exams for a position in the city hall, state exams, federal exams etc.

Obviously, not an equivalent to the exams taken in the US for some of their institutions.

We certainly have a difference in concept about qualifying for the post, but they have exams taken as well:

During the pre-hearing conference, the parties agreed upon the following undisputed facts:
1.  The Appellant took the civil service examination for police officer on April 30, 2005
and received a score of 91.
...
11. Since the Appellant took the civil service examination on April 30, 2005, he was
required to live within the City of Boston from April 30, 2004 to April 30, 2005.     "

Well, if I am not missing something...
