Fran, sometimes in the newspapers there are ads looking for international couriers. The service usually pays a large portion of the ticket in exchange for the traveler to deliver a letter or small package to another country. This is fantastic for backpackers who have more time than money and do not mind not traveling on a fixed schedule.
Years ago in Los Angeles I had a colleague who did more or less the same thing with cars. If he wanted to go to the East Coast, he would contact agencies that specialized in delivering private cars to other states. He probably paid for the gas, but there was no charge for the use of the car. In fact, I think he was given a little money for lodging.
