||gerund and The /I/ and /i/
I would like to know if the gerund applies to that rule of the "/I/, just like in live or hill...
I remember I read that before /ng/ sound (like in sing )there is a neutralisation between /i/ and /I/, so the quality of the vowel is not relevant (although /I/ seems to be preferred). I'll look for the reference later.
And why is that that in the words "Police" and "Machine" we use the vowel sound "/i/"?
They are French origin words, guess English speaker kept the vowel quality those words have in French.
