Mensagem:  if the syllable is stressed, then it will be spoken with the /I/ sound....  This is better!

What I meant is that there is a contrast between /i/ and /I/ in stressed syllables (sleeping vs sliping), in unstressed syllables the difference may convey information about the speaker (age, origin and the like) but not another word.
