Mensagem:  Sid, that sounds like "work furlough".  Nights during the week and the entire weekend are spent in jail.  Weekdays can be spent at work. 

I've never heard of anything in the USA that is an exact match for what you are talking about.  It's common in Mexico.  I have not heard of it in Costa Rica.

Patti, when someone is on probation, they do not have to return to jail unless they have misbehaved (violating the conditions of probation that commonly include working 40 hours per week, not using or possessing drugs, not being convicted in a new case, undergoing anti-drug abuse counseling or alchololism rehabilitation, supporting dependents, etc.).  Does "regime aberto" still sound like probation to you?
