Not all ginger hairs are red, there are people with auburn, almost orange, or dark copper hair (a little bit alike silver hair), the latter is maybe the ones that inspired the term ginger (gengibre, aqui cor - da cor dessa planta)
It seems that nobody dared an explanation for the connection ginger - red hair, as far as know.
One theory of mine is that the most easily found colours are dark (and its shades), and blondes. So, maybe the copper hair would be the beggining of the "ginger" thing, then it encompassed to others colour not often seen, the orange, auburn and red. Anyway, its a hunch and guess of mine.
