The drug Minoxidil was found to grow hair but that wasn't why it was made. What was Minoxidil originally meant to treat?

"The drug Minoxidil was found to grow hair..."
It was discovered that the drug Minoxidil grew/grows hair...
The drug Minoxidil grew/grows hair...

The words "found to" are not necessary, and they rarely add anything significant to the meaning of the sentence.

In some contexts, "personal pronoun + find = to be one's experience, to believe, to think, etc.  For example:
I find that her parties are boring.
I believe that her parties are boring.
Her parties are boring.
It has been my experience that her parties are boring.

I find that I need eight hours of sleep each night.
It is my experience that I need eight hours of sleep each night.
I need eight hours of sleep each night.
I believe I need eight hours of sleep each night.

I found that I had to study very hard.
I discovered that I had to study very hard.
I had to study very hard.
