I heard an American I met use this idiom "we were worked up on our rent". I thought she was saying that she got screwed on her rent. Did I get that right?
I think a) She might had been worked up in anticipation on her rent. b) She might had been very angry or upset about her rent (then it might be because she regreted having acted emotionally before, not having read the fine print!) c) She got overly worried about a thing that wouldn´t deserve so much attention, her rent. Maybe she prioritized it over other things that could be more important. Once I got so worked up about flying, the day before the flight! when I got to the destination at last, I tought in retrospect and figured I should not.
Anyway the event was affected by her emotion. That is, it doesn´t necessarily means that she got screwed up in the process. It takes some context to know for certain.
