"Avenger" is a good translation, but "vigilante" has a clearer meaning. An "avenger" takes revenge for an evil/criminal action (usually against himself) and normally operates alone. A "vigilante" is seeking justice, not revenge,an evil/criminal action. And he is trying to protect others, not himself. Often he is working as a member of a group (often called "the Committee of Vigilance"). Many towns in the American West had "committees of vigilance" long before they had police officers, sheriffs, etc. San Francisco, I believe, is an example of this. Both "take the law into their own hands". |
