When used as adjectives, they are usually interchangeable. Possibly it's merely a difference in taste, in collocation. Her ex-husband = Her former husband His ex-boss = His former boss but (I have never heard "ex-tenant" used.) (I have never heard "ex-colony" used.) "Former" is sometimes used to mean "the one before, the previous". This meaning is not quite the same as "ex". I wish I could be more helpful. |
