I am not Ricardo, but my twopence´s worth here:
One being called would say "present" or "here" in a classroom roll call, in a less disciplined countries, older students, etc I would say that the teacher could say aloud the name of him/her. In the military, they use the latter way. I mean let´s say the drill sargeant just said "Osorio" then Osorio is expected to repeat after him "Osorio"; "Osorio here" or just ''here'' as he makes his boots hit the ground with a thump! So everyone can listen him and see visually that he is answering, not other guy passing for him...
