Antoher option would be "to fall at the last hurdle". A "hurdle" is a barrier over which contestants must leap in certain running races (in Portuguese, "obstáculo"). Imagine, for example, a horse race. The expression conveys the idea that the contestant has managed to leap all hurdles except the last one. In other words, the person has failed near the end. |
