Just to illustrate, I decided to generate a graph comparing the expressions "snatch defeat" and "snatch victory" across the years (in books):
The expression "snatch victory" has been used in books since 1800 (which is as far back as the tool goes). The expression "snatch defeat", however, has only gained popularity from 1940 on. In recent years, the expressions are almost as common.
