So, out of my impression....
a) "after that, I went to''~
b) "after that, I came to"~
My impression is that in (a) have a ring of "after a certain era/period/phase etc. "eu passei a fazer algo (alguma coisa..." ) e começar algo (um curso, tocar guitarra etc, por exemplo). It may or may not suggest a reaction to something else,
The focus is on the time frame, it seems.
(b) I come to [verb] suggests it´s a reaction to a previous event, the time frame is not important, just that it happens after something else. The focus is on what happens next. Sometimes A and B intercepts in meaning.
