In English, I have never heard a good equivalent for "interior" in the sense of "o interior de São Paulo". The problem with "countryside" is that it means country (campo). If we lived in Limeira or Piracicaba, we certainly would not be living in the countryside.
Perhaps we need to explain where we live. "I live two hours east of Belo. My sister lives half an hour south of Diamantina. My cousin lives with his family an hour out of Washington, DC." What do you think?
