The term originated back when slaves would run way and when they are caught and returned to their owners, the guy doing the whopping would usually be another slave. Eventually, however, as the overseers began to do the whopping more often the term cracker began to be connotated solely with them. As you noted, the original Aristocratic white southerners aren't crackers. That's because they rarely whopped run way slaves themselves; they let their Irish-men overseers do it instead. Anyway, this is just one theory as to the origin of the term cracker. There are many more. |
