Indeed, at least in literature it was used to refer to a woman.
But long ago, not used these days in that sense. Unless you are Jane Austen! So you could use some poetic licence.
In fact, it is in the dictionary as such, but people deem it a taboo of sorts and don´t use it in that sense. Just on the safe side.
