Mensagem:  A "tendency" is better used for qualities a person might have. It´s when someone is prone to (do) something. 

 Jim has a tendency to exaggerate!
People have the tendency to speak more loudly when they get excited.



Trend would be a pattern or something shown by numbers, as in a graph (or having to do with numbers/figures).
The fashion show revealed the trends for the summer.
The stock market trends are displayed on a screen.
