Mensagem: | Ana Maria, When you were filling this form and had to inform on your background, in which country were you? Many years ago I worked for IBGE collecting data for the Census. We had instructions to never determine the race of the people we were interviewing - it was for them to decide. So I felt really silly at asking an obviously black or white person "what is your race?" But sometimes the answers were surprising. I think this is a very sensible approach - let everyone decide their own race. Perhaps they have mixed ancestors and identify more strongly with one group or other. Regarding race and ethnicity, in Britain you usually have the following options to choose from when filling forms: White - British White - Irish other White background Asian or Asian-British Indian Asian or Asian-British Pakistani Asian or Asian-British Bangladeshi Chinese other Asian background Black or Black-British Caribbean Black or Black-British African other Black background Mixed - White and Black Caribbean Mixed - White and Black African Mixed - White and Asian other Mixed background other Ethnic background prefer not to say I usually take the easy way out and select the last option. But I really don't care how people label me :) Regards, Adriana. |
