Assunto: | Re: More about THE na frente de nomes |
Mensagem: | Thinking about The: While I have stated that "the" doesn't appear before "proper names", as usual there are exceptions to the rule. Apparently when proper names are in plural they do carry "the". The Philippines, the Netherlands, the Falklands, the Amazones, the Seychelles, the Bahamas. Exceptions to the singular rule: The Caribbean, the Algarve, the Alentejo. The last 2 being regions in Portugal. This reminds me of a polemic in the local Algarvian English language paper some years ago. Some British readers wrote letters saying that if you lived in Manchester, in Yorkshire or in Kent, you couln't live IN the Algarve. The debate lasted for weeks. However uptill today we continue in THE. Even better: we can also live ON. Like living on the Costa del Sol, you can live ON the Algarve. Liverpudlians however have to live plain and simple in Liverpool. Tough luck. |
