Mensagem:  "Strictly correct would be "Whom did Sue phone?" but 97% of Americans would not say that correctly!" So that means it IS correct, for an overwhelming number of people will use 'who'; whom' can be considered a linguistic fossil, otherwise, we would have to say "thou art correct" or even use the declinations of Old English.
