(1) I found nothing in the article suggesting that Rio was the capital of Chile. Did I miss something?
(2) Did you read any of the stories? I read "Deep in Brazil, a Flight of Paranoid Fancy". In it he wrote about the "Novo Mapa do Brasil" that has been circulating for at least three years. The last time I got it was only a week ago. The text had been modified and improved from 2002 when I received it from a journalist in Recife who happily passed it on to her contacts without bothering to check its veracity. Nevertheless, the text - supposedly written by an American and in use in American schools -
still has many "negative transfers" of a Portuguese speaker writing in English. "A Folha" did an expose of this hoax around 2003. As I recall, it identified the writers ("writers", not "writer") as Brazilian military officers. I find it sad that Brazilians seem so eager to believe this crap.
