Mensagem:  I was raised in Florida, as it happens; one of the few nasty things I didn't do was spear frogs, so I don't know what it's colloquially called there (Tom was raised elsewhere I suspect, so what it's called in florida isn't necessarily germane). Here in Mass people 'jig' for squid, etc. with a hook on a string. Different from spearing, clearly, but seems possible it's from the same word. On the same vein, I realize I don't know how 'gig' is pronounced when used to refer to a boat, since I've never heard it said in that context. Perhaps it's the same as the musicians gig, or maybe not.
